Abstract

1364950 Cyclopentene polymerization catalyst BAYER AG 21 Dec 1972 [21 Dec 1971] 59111/72 Heading C3P A catalyst for the ring-opening polymerization of cyclopentene comprises (a) a tungsten or molybdenum salt, (b) an organo-tin compound and (c) a boron halide or a Lewis base complex therof. The catalyst may be preformed or formed in the presence of the monomer, component (c) preferably being added last in either case. The polymers obtained contain predominantly cis double bonds when (a) is a tungsten salt and the polymerization temperature is -100‹ to -10‹ C., and predominantly trans double bonds when the temperature is -10‹ to + 50‹ C. and (a) is either a tungsten or a molybdenum salt. The molecular weight of the polymer may be controlled by use of a 1-alkene as molecular weight regulator. In examples cyclopentene is polymerized in toluene, in some cases in the presence of 1-butene, using catalysts derived from (a) WCl 6 or MoCl 5 (b) tetra-ethyl or tetrabutyl tin and (c) the BF 3 complex of diethyl either, tetrahydrofuran or anisole.
