Abstract
1364873 Dissolving vinyl polymers in water NALCO CHEMICAL CO 12 Oct 1971 [15 Dec 1970 18 Aug 1971] 47534/71 Heading C3P A method for dissolving water-soluble vinyl addition polymers in water comprises preparing a water-in-oil emulsion containing such a polymer in finely divided form, and then adding the emulsion to water to cause inversion of the emulsion, whereby the polymer is rapidly dissolved in the water to form a solution. Polymers specified are polyacrylamide, copolymers of acrylamide with methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, an acrylic acid salt, maleic anhydride, acrylonitrile, styrene or dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylic acid, sodium polyacrylate, polystyrene sulphonate, polymers of mono- or di-allylamine, and polymers of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate. The method is of particular advantage for dissolving polymers having a molecular weight in excess of 1,000,000. The oil component of the emulsion is suitably an aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon such as benzene, xylene, toluene, mineral oil, kerosene, naphtha, petrolatum or branchedchain isoparaffinic solvent. The emulsions usually contain an oil-soluble emulsifying agent. Inversion of the emulsion is suitably effected by adding a surfactant to the polymer emulsion or to the water in which the polymer is to be dissolved, before the emulsion and the water are combined; the surfactant may be anionic, cationic or non-ionic. Other usable inversion means include agitation, high voltage electric fileds, heat and pH shift, and addition of elec trolytes to the water.
