Abstract

1364754 Mining machines WALTER KIDDE & CO Inc 3 Feb 1972 [11 Feb 1971] 5160/72 Heading E1F [Also in Division A5] Explosions in mine tunnels are suppressed by locating radiation sensor means to receive radiation from a detection zone but shielding said means from radiation from another zone nearer the tunnel face, and releasing explosion suppressant from a sealed container in response to detection of radiation by the sensor. Preferably the sensor and the suppressant container are mounted on a mobile "continuous miner" as shown in Fig. 1, in which machine 11 has cutter head assembly 13 that excavates coal from face 14 of tunnel 12. Detection units 15 with UV-responsive sensor heads 16 are mounted on the front of 11, each head having shielding masks 34, 25 (Fig. 2) to limit the radiation received to that within annular fan-shaped volume indicated by dashed lines 17, forming detection zone A comprising a lateral section of tunnel 12. Mounted on the rear of 11 are suppression units 21 operatively connected to detectors 15 and arranged to discharge suppressant in a further fan-shaped space indicated by dashed lines 22 and forming discharge zone B. Thus two obscured zones are provided, zone C ahead of 11 extending from the front surface of zone A to mine face 14, and zone D extending rearwardly of zone A, and these zones enable short duration emissions of radiation from face 14 to be ignored and flame fronts propagating down tunnel 12 detected. Fig. 3 shows suppressor unit 21 comprising cylinder 41 containing suppressant 42, e.g. CH 3 Br, and discharge tube 43 closed by frangible diaphragm 44. Cylindrical screen 45 and deflector plate 46 are mounted on the closed end of 43, and detonator assembly 47 projects into 43 adjacent diaphragm 44. 47 explodes in response to a signal on line 48, rupturing diaphragm 44 and releasing suppressant in a discharge pattern indicated by dashed lines 22.
