Abstract

1364451 Hot pressing silicon nitride DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 26 Oct 1971[5 Nov 1970] 52642/70 Heading C7D A number of Si 3 N 4 articles are formed by simultaneously hot pressing a number of charges 24 of Si 3 N 4 powder and a flux in a die 10 with each charge separated by a spacer 22 coated with a release agent. The charges preferably consist of a -300 mesh mixture of Si 3 N 4 and MgO in a weight ratio of 20:1 and the graphite spacers 22 are coated with an aqueous suspension of MgO. The inside walls of the graphite die 10 may be coated with BN. A mould space divider 48 comprising circular sheet metal band 50 with radially extending arms 52 may be used for charging the powder on the graphite spacers 22 and removed after charging. The hot pressing temperature is controlled to maintain the charge below 1900-2050‹C which is the Si 3 N 4 dissociation temperature.
