Abstract

1364201 Extruded polyamide foam articles BAYER AG 7 Jan 1972 [12 Jan 1971] 793/72 Heading C3C [Also in Division B5] Extruded polyamide foam articles are continuously produced by introducing a polymerisable and foamable mixture comprising (a) a lactam having at least 5 ring members, (b) a polyisocyanate and optionally a mono-isocyanate, both of which may be masked, and (c) an alkaline catalyst into the feed of a screw extruder under a pressure of at least 1À2 atmospheres, polymerizing the mixture in the barrel of the extruder at a temperature above the m.p. of the resulting polyamide, and extruding the mixture while foaming through a nozzle heated to 210-290‹ C. The lactam may be α-pyrrolidone, #-caprolactam, oenanthic lactam, caprylic lactam, decanolactam, undecanolactam, lauric lactam, pentadecanolactam, hexadecanolactam or methylcyclohexanone isoxirne. In the examples the polymerizable mixture consisted of a lactam, sodium formate, N-benzyl acetamide, the addition product of hexamethylene diisocyanate or diphenyl methane-4,4<SP>1</SP>-diisocyanate and caprolactam, and an organosiloxane hydroxyalkylene block copolymer, with optionally carbon black calcium carbonate or aluminium powder.
