Abstract

136,399. Durrant, G. March 1 1919. Winding - machines. - Relates to machines for winding cloth, paper, &c., of the kind having two driving or winding rollers rotating in the same direction at a little distance apart from each other, the material being wound on a batch-roller to a predetermined diameter by one winding-roller, and then transferred for completion to the second winding- roller, a second batch-roller being meanwhile placed in contact with the first winding-roller to have the cut end of the material going to the first batch-roller transferred to it to form a second batch. The means for transferring a partly-wound batch from one winding-roller to the other consists of arms pivoted to the machine frame and carrying slotted batch-supporting arms, means being provided for holding the batch-roller elevated during transference, and link-and-lever mechanism for operating the main arms to transfer the batch to the second winding-roller against inclined guides and to return the parts to normal position for the next batch to be wound. As shown, the batchroller u is driven by the winding-roller d and is supported in slotted links y pivoted to main arms v, which are pivoted at w to the machine frame. As the diameter on the batch-roller u increases, the arms y rise and are held in the raised position by ratchet mechanism. When the batch attains a predetermined diameter, links 7 pivoted to the arms v are moved to the right by a hand-lever to transfer the batch to the roller e against inclined guides 12. The arms v are then returned to normal position, a second batch-roller being placed in the arms y, a knife 13 is raised, and a knife 24 lowered to sever the material. The cut end of the material is then engaged by normally slack tapes 30 passing around a fixed pulley 31 and a roller or pulleys 38 mounted in arms 37 pivoted to rocking levers 35. Upon allowing the levers 35 to rise under spring action, the rollers 38 and arms 37 are moved into the position shown in dotted lines, thereby tightening the tapes and, carrying the cut end of the material into contact with the new batch-roller. The tapes are again lowered and the knives moved into their original positions.
