Abstract
1363641 Pile fabrics PLASTIC RESEARCH LABORATORIES Ltd 16 July 1971 [17 April 1970] 18389/70 Heading D1K A pile fabric or carpet tile is made by forming a batt of not more than three layers of parallel yarns or fibres, applying a temporary adhesive to the batt to form a rigid sheet, cutting the sheet transversely to the yarns to form rigid strips, implanting the strips edgewise into a backing material, removing the temporary adhesive and brushing the yarns to form a pile. In Figure 1 layers of rigidised yarns 10 pass through a box 16 and clamps 11, 12, 13 and are severed between the clamps 12, 13 by a blade 15. The clamp 13 with the severed yarns is then removed and the ends of the yarns implanted in a backing. In Figure 7 yarns 22 from a creel, pass between aligning rollers 23, are coated with temporary adhesive from a hopper 24, passed under a dryer 26 to dry the adhesive and through nip rollers 27 to a guillotine 28. The severed strips from the guillotine 28 pass down a transparent chute 29, are consolidated by a reciprocatory tamper 30 and passed to a conveyor 32 where backing material is applied from a hopper 31. The backed fabric then passes around a heated drum 34 to set the backing, the hopper 31 being shielded from the drum 34 by a plate 33. The pile is then raised by a brush 36 and the fabric may be cut into carpet tiles by a further guillotine 37. Details of temporary adhesives and backings are given.
