Abstract

1363352 Edge connectors PLESSEY CO Ltd 6 Oct 1972 [8 Jan 1972] 955/72 Heading H2E An edge connector comprises a U-shaped insulating member 1 with a D-shaped resilient insulating member 10 supporting a row of flexible contacts 2 along the inner surface of each limb of the U, the curved surface of the D- member being recessed 18 between adjacent contacts 2. The U-member 1 is formed of glass filled polycarbonate with apertures 3, 7, 8 for retaining the contacts, tapered male dovetail sections 6 which receive female dovetail sections (6a) on the D-member 10, and grooves 11 and buttresses 12 which hold the contacts in separation from one another. The D-member 10 may be of a polyurethane elastomer and either solid or hollow and the V-shaped recesses 18 prevent ballooning of the member and permit independent flexing of individual contacts. The contacts 2 each comprise a strip of flexible but not necessarily resilient metal formed with a step 2b at one end for anchoring in the apertures 7, 8, a stop 4 for engaging the underside 1d of the U- member adjacent the respective aperture 3, a detent 5 for engagement within the aperture 3; the portion 2c of the contact which overlies the D-member is of reduced thickness and provided with a gold layer contact pad 9. A slot 13 in each U -member opens into the apertures 8 and receives a conductive bridge 14 with selected projections 14a which extend into the apertures 8 and connect with the ends 2a of contacts when the edge connector is not mated thus providing a link between selected contacts when a circuit card is withdrawn from the edge connector; insertion of a circuit card (15) depresses the D-member 10 causing the end 2a to move in the aperture 8 away from the bridge 14. Mounting projections 17 are provided.
