Abstract
1362965 Change-speed gears; positive clutches EATON CORP 29 July 1971 [3 Aug 1970] 35592/71 Headings F2C and F2D In a change speed gear including two parallel shafts carrying intermeshing gear-wheels, at least one of the wheels is axially movable on its shaft to effect engagement of a resiliently loaded jaw clutch for establishing a driving connection between the wheel and shaft, and the arrangment is such that when the wheel is moved axially the two elements of the clutch are brought into contact with each other and one of them is displaced against its resilient loading and subsequently returned by its loading to effect engagement of the clutch on achievement of substantial synchronization of the two elements of the clutch. As shown, a main shaft 23, common to both a main transmission section 12 and an auxiliary transmission section 13, extends between input and output shafts 16, 77 and carries gear-wheels 31, 32, 33, a reverse wheel 34, and gear-wheels 71, 72. The wheel 72 has a driving connection with the output shaft, and a wheel 18 is driven by the input shaft. All of these wheels are rotatable relatively to the shaft 23 and axially movable thereon by selector forks (not shown). The wheels 18, 31, 32, 33 are in continuous mesh with, and float between, diametrically opposed pairs of wheels 25, 26, 27, 28 fast on layshafts 21, 22, the wheel 34 is in continuous mesh with wheels (not shown) meshing with wheels 29 on the layshafts, and the wheels 71, 72 are in continuous mesh with diametrically opposed pairs of wheels (not shown) fast on two further layshafts (not shown). The clutches comprise collars, e.g. 42, 53, Fig. 3, splined to the shaft 23 and urged apart against stops 46, 58 by a spring 47. The collars have external teeth 48, 54 which can be engaged with teeth 49, 56 of gear-wheels 33, 32, and the edges of the teeth have conical surfaces 51, 52. To engage a gear in the main section a shift lever (not shown) is actuated and by an appropriate selector fork (not shown) moves a wheel axially on the shaft 23 so that a clutch collar is engaged and moved axially against spring pressure by engagement of the conical surfaces 51, 52 until the speeds of the shaft and wheel become synchronized and the spring is able to effect engagement of the clutch. To effect a change of ratio in the auxiliary section 13 the desired ratio is preselected and the shift lever is operated to select neutral in the main section 11 whereupon a fluid-operated piston (not shown) moves the wheels 71, 72 axially to disconnect one from, and connect the other to, the shaft 23 through a clutch 41B.
