Abstract
1362869 Forming profiled strip; angular bending; flying shears HUNTER DOUGLAS 23 Aug 1971 [31 Aug 1970] 39415/71 Headings B3A B3E and B3W [Also in Division B5] Permanently deformable strip, particularly prepainted metal strip, profiled in a forming machine, is continuously fed to a flying shear or saw which, at the moment when the strip is temporarily coupled with it, is driven by fluid pressure actuated means at a speed slightly slower than the feed speed of the strip, the cutting member of the shear or saw being actuated when, due to the coupling, the strip and the shear or saw are moving at the same speed. A roll forming machine, Fig. 2, comprises roll units 3, 4 and 5, 6 driven by drive members 7 and 8 respectively through a continuously adjustable change-speed drive. Groups of rollers in each unit are coupled by chains for synchronous drive and each unit is individually replaceable. Strip emerging from the roll forming machine enters a flying shear device, Fig. 3, comprising a blade 12, reciprocable by a pneumatic cylinder 13, is mounted on a slide 11. The slide 11 is connected, by a rod 17 adjustable in length, to a slide 16 carrying a gauging stop 20, the slides being movable as a unit along a table 14 by a cylinder unit 22-24. The stop 20 is mounted on an arm 19 which is pivotable about a shaft 18 on the slide 16 by a pneumatic cylinder 21. In use, the slides 11 and 16 are moved in the strip feed direction at a speed slightly lower than the feed speed until the leading end of the profiled strip engages the stop 20. When the slides have reached the same speed as the strip the blade 12 is actuated. The stop 20 is raised by cylinder 21 and the slides are returned to starting position by cylinder 22. An ejector 94 removes the cut length laterally and the stop 20 is re-set. The ejector is carried by a horizontal shaft rotated by a rack-and-pinion actuated by pneumatic cylinders 74, 75. A pneumatic control system, Fig. 4 (not shown), includes a spring-loaded valve 49 which when depressed actuates the blade 12, the arrangement being such that the slide 11 does not depress the valve until after the strip has engaged the stop 20. The return stroke of the slides 11 and 16 is braked when the slide 11 depresses a spring- loaded valve 48. The pneumatic system also includes a safety starting valve 37. A flying saw device (not shown) includes pneumaticallyoperated clamps for holding the strip near the saw blade and a sawdust blower is provided. The saw and shear blade units 12, 13 may be interchangeable or they may be mounted sideby-side and be selectively actuable.
