Abstract
1362819 Gauging ING C OLIVETTI & C SpA 8 Nov 1971 [7 Nov 1970] 51814/71 Heading B3B [Also in Division H2] An automatic control apparatus for a machine tool, having a cutter-head or work-head movable by an electric step-by-step motor, comprises a pulse counter for the step pulses which is reset to zero in any predetermined resetting position of the head. As shown, a machine tool comprises a head 3, on which a tool (not shown) is mounted, slidable on a platform 12. A double-acting hydraulic cylinder 14 is mounted on the platform 12 so that by selective electrical operation of valves EV1, EV2 a piston 20 is displaced to rapidly move the head 3 by a rod 19. The motion of the rod 19 is transmitted to the head 3 through a micrometric adjustment device comprising a nut 16 co-operating with a screwed portion 18 of the shaft 19. The screw is displaced within the nut 16 by rotating the rod 19 through a spline, by gears 22, 24 from a reduction gear 25 driven by an electrical step-by-step motor 26. Alternatively, the gear 24 can be manually driven via a shaft 26. The sequenced energization of the valves EV1, EV2 and the forwards/backwards pulse rates to the motor 26 are determined by an electronic logic arrangement responsive to manual dimension setting devices and preset working cycles. The preset working cycles comprise (a) a setup cycle whereby the starting zero position is fixed from which subsequent cycles are begun; this is attained by bringing the tool into contact with the workpiece, (b) a machining cycle in which roughing and finishing cuts occur at differing speeds determined by logic selected pulse generators; upon completion of the machining cycle the tool is maintained in contact with the workpiece without a feed occurring for a predetermined period; and (c) a cutting-in-air cycle for rapid feed to a position outside the maximum tolerance on the diameter of a number of similar piece-parts. Facilities are also provided for tool regrinding and compensation of the starting zero-position for the consequent change in tool dimensions.
