Abstract
1362679 Radiation therapy control VARIAN ASSOCIATES 12 Nov 1971 [27 Nov 1970] 24345/73 Divided out of 1362678 Heading G4H In a computer controlled radiation therapy machine where the computer contains a patient's treatment plan comprising radiation doses to be given for prescribed positions for the machine, the plan is displayed to an operator and updated by the amount of radiation given in any step of the treatment to give a cumulative total of radiation given to the patient. The plan comprises a number of machine positions at which radiation is to be given for any one treatment session, each position being defined by the positions of a couch and gantry containing the radiation source, and there being prescribed doses for each position defined by the radiation attenuation to be used and blocks to be used which blank off those parts of the patient not needing irradiation. The computer indicates to the operator which step of the treatment is to be performed next. The total radiation given for each position is accumulated as well as a grand total. The treatment plan may be altered by an operator, any new set of positions or radiation doses being compared against acceptable limits. Patients' treatment plans are recorded on individual cassette tapes which are read into the computer store before the treatment begins and the up-dated plan being rerecorded on the cassette at the end of treatment. The automatic positioning of the parts of the machine form the subject matter of claims of Specification 1,362,678. Communication between the digital computer and analog sensors sensing the radiation and position of the machine parts is via an interface unit containing A/D and D/A converters.
