Abstract
1362618 Controllable attenuators A KATHREINSNR 7 April 1972 [6 May 1971] 16078/72 Heading H3U A four terminal attenuator comprises a bridged T network, whose shunt and by-pass arms contain respectively at least one silicon or germanium diode 1, 2, receiving, via chokes 8, 9; 10, 11, or directly, Fig. 3 (not shown), a D.C. bias voltage whose variation controls the attenuator characteristic. Resistors 3 and 4 are both of a value equal to the characteristic impedance of lines to and from the attenuator. For higher cut-off frequency, the by-pass arm may have three diodes in series (21-23), Fig. 2 (not shown), for reduced capacitance, the shunt arm having diodes (24-26) in parallel for reduced inductance. To reduce the intermodulation level, a full-wave bridge rectifier diode array may be used in each path, Fig. 3 (not shown), or each arm may contain an antiparallel configuration of a pair of diodes, each in series with a respective capacitance, Fig. 4 (not shown).
