Abstract

136,248. Norris, W. J., and Pogose, N. Dec. 9, 1918. Pontoon rafts.-Relates to life-saving rafts of the kind comprising number of tubular air containers which support a decking, preferably on both sides so that the raft is reversible. According to the invention, two or more rigid air chambers A, A<1>, B, B<1> arranged parallel to each other are clamped between upper and lower frameworks composed of transverse beams D, D<1> and drawn together by bolts D<3*> passing outside the air chambers, filling-pieces D<3>, through which the bolts also pass, being inserted, if desired, between the frame members D, D<1> and shaped to fit against the sides of the tubes A, A'. The outer tubes A, A' are connected at their ends by means of flanged bends C to transverse end tubes A<2>, A<3>. In order to protect the outer tubes from damage, the frame members D, D' project beyond the tubes, and a fender F completely surrounds the raft, being supported at the sides by the filling-pieces D<3>, and at the bends C and the ends by filling- pieces F<1>. The tubes may be divided into airtight compartments by partitions A<3*>, B<2>, and a hand-rail G is preferably carried on both deckings E, E<1>, which are secured to the frame members D, D'.
