Abstract

1361794 Detection of moving bodies COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 21 July 1972 [20 Aug 1971] 39201/71 Heading G4H Apparatus for detecting slipping of a lift cage cable 3 relative to a drive drum assembly 47 to which it is drivably attached solely through frictional contact comprises an inductance coil 10 located around the lift shaft 2, means 12 for detecting any change in inductance in 10 due to passage of the lift cage 1 and for producing a singal indicative thereof, indicator mechanism 25-29 for producing a second signal indicating the apparent position of the cage 1 when it is apparently adjacent to the coil 10, and a logic unit 23 which compares the signals to actuate an audible alarm 30 and stop the apparatus in the event of undesirable slip. Coil 10 is connected to an oscillator 13, Fig. 2 (not shown), in detector 12; this and another oscillator (16) produce a nominally constant beat frequency which is converted (19) to a voltage. When cage 1 rises to the level of coil 1, the inductance of coil 10 (and hence the frequency of (13)) alters to produce a positive voltage transient from (19) which is passed by a blocking capacitor (20) to operate a relay which signals unit 23. The apparent position signal (indicated on a dial 6) is derived from switches 26, 27 operated by long and short range cams 28, 29 rotated by the drive shaft 7. The signal from 26, 27 will reach 23 before or after the signal from 12 according as the slip is positive or negative (cage 1 respectively lower or higher than indicated on dial 6); if there is no slip then the signals arrive simultaneously, In the event of positive or no slip, the operator brakes normally, following the indication on dial 6; however, negative slip above a certain level is dangerous, and if this is detected by unit 23 it causes the winder control to apply the brakes and causes the alarm 30 to alert the operator. When the cage is descending, coil 10 may detect the position of a rising counterweight on the other end of cable 3, or of another cage if provided.
