Abstract

1360506 Folding fabrics CUTTER MACHINE CO INC 17 Sept 1971 [21 Sept 1970] 43409/71 Heading D1S A cloth laying machine comprises a reciprocating carriage 30, Fig. 3, a pair of pivotably supported tuck blades 49, 50 for folding the cloth 25 at opposite ends of the carriage's traverse and means for latching the trailing blade (49 as shown) in a laying position and the proceeding blade in a raised position during each folding operation. Tuck blade 49 is connected to each carriage side wall 41 by a leg 52, pivot pin 55, arm 51 and pivot pin 53 and blade 50 is similarly connected by 62, 65, 61 and 53. Towards the end of a traverse catcher arms 36 are raised as their attached rollers ride up carriages cam arms 78. They swing leading blade 50 and leg 62 into a raised position in which the curved upper extremities 60, 70 of arms 51, 61 are received by recesses 73, 74 of legs 62, 61 so as to lock the blades 49, 50 into laying and raised positions respectively, as shown in Fig. 8. At this point catcher bar 35 on arm 36 and blade 49 have begun to make the fold. Roller 80 then falls between lands 76 and the carriage reverses direction (Figs. 9, 10, not shown) so that catcher bar 35 completes the fold and presses it down onto previous folds whilst blade 50 returns to its laying position and becomes the trailing blade. The cloth 25 is supplied from roll 22 over roll 26, dancer roll 27 and feed roll 28. If slack is sensed by dancer roll 27 it energises an electromagnetic brake 24 to retard the rotation of cloth roll 22 by means of ferromagnetic brake disk 125. Feed roller 28 is normally driven via left front carriage wheel 17, unidirectional transmission 89, Fig. 2, drive shaft 87, drive pulley 90, belt 91, variable speed pulley 92, first drive sproket 94, chain 95, first driven sproket 96, clutch 97 and shaft 86. The diameter of pulley 92 is adjusted by knob 99 and shaft 93 until cloth 25 is slightly underfeed by roll 28. If the cloth tension thereby produced becomes excessive the trailing tuck blade 49 is urged to rotate rearwardly about pivot 55, causing rod 119 to move away from finger 117 of microswitch 115 which therefore energises magnetic clutch 104. This causes shaft 87 to drive shaft 86 at a slightly faster rate via drive sproket 100, chain 101, driven sprocket 102 and clutch 104. In order to supply the additional cloth required for folding shaft 87 is arranged to drive shaft 86 at about 3 times its usual speed via clutch 106, sproket 108, chain 109 and sproket 110 near the end of each traverse. Clutch 106 is activated whilst plunger rod 127 is in contact with stop (128, Fig. 1, not shown). The height of the carriage is raised as each fold is made by the action of stop 132 upon plunger 130, Fig. 7. This makes link 133 vertical, thereby moving rack 136 and rotating gear 137. Pawl 140 prevents the reversal of gear 137 as rack 136 and link 133 resume their normal positions.
