Abstract

1360451 Hydrolysed organotrihydrocarbonoxysilane binders STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 24 Sept 1971 [25 Sept 1970] 44653/71 Heading C3T A binder composition comprises a condensate of a silane RSi(OR<SP>1</SP>) 3 and/or RSi(OR<SP>11</SP>OR<SP>111</SP>) 3 , in which R and R<SP>1</SP> are C 1-10 hydrocarbon radicals, R<SP>11</SP> is a divalent C 2-6 hydrocarbon radical and R<SP>111</SP> is H or a C 1-10 hydrocarbon radical obtained by reaction thereof with at least 0À8 moles of water per Si-bonded hydrocarbonoxy group in the presence of 0À1-1À0 wt. per cent of the binder of an organic acid free of hydroxy groups and providing a pH of 1À0-5À5. The hydrolysis is preferably conducted in an organic solvent, e.g. a high-boiling ether, ketone, alcohol or hydrocarbon. Preferably the volatiles are removed from the product with addition of a high-boiling organic solvent to maintain a constant percentage of SiO 2 until the temperature of the mixture equals the b.p. of the added solvent. Coating compositions may be prepared by adding Zn dust to the binder composition in the proportion 50-90 : 50-10; other fillers and pigments, e.g. Ca and Mg metasilicates, especially fibrous fillers, Fe 2 O 3 , CdS, TiO 2 or lithopones, may be present in which case the filler may total 70% of the composition. In the examples MeSi(OEt) 3 is added to water in ethoxyethanol in the presence of acetic, toluenesulphonic, benzoic or adipic acid and the product is mixed with Zn dust.
