Abstract

1360165 Polyphenylene ether/polystyrene/ polycarbonate blends MITSUBISHI GAS CHEMICAL CO Inc 7 July 1972 [9 July 1971] 31999/72 Headings C3P and C3R A thermoplastic blend comprises (A) 15- 80% by wt. of a polyphenylene ether having recurring units of the formula wherein R 1 and R 2 may be the same or different, and are methyl or ethyl; (B) 5-60% by wt. of one or more styrene resins containing at least 70% of units derived from a compound within the general formula where R 3 is H or a C 1-4 alkyl group, X is H or Cl, or Br, and m is 1 or 2; and (c) 2-60% by wt. of an aromatic polycarbonate composed of recurring units of general formula wherein R 4 and R 5 may be the same or different and are as defined for R 3 and X and m are as defined above, the total of (A), (B) and (C) being 100%. Polyphenylene ethers specified are poly-(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene) ether, poly- (2-methyl-6-ethyl-1,4-phenylene) ether, and poly-(2,6-diethyl-1,4-phenylene) ether. The styrene resin includes copolymers, high impact polystyrenes, poly-α-methyl styrene, polychlorostyrene, polystyrene/acrylonitrile, polystyrene butadiene), poly-(styrene/bromostyrene) and poly-(styrene/chlorostyrene) and mixtures thereof. The polycarbonate, which may be obtained in the usual way from a diphenol and phosgene, a haloformate or carbonate ester, may be derived from such dihydric phenols as 2,2-bis-(4- hydroxy phenyl) propane-(bisphenol A), 2,2- bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) butane (bisphenol B), 2,2 - bis - (4-hydroxyphenyl)pentane, 2,4<SP>1</SP> - dihydroxydiphenyl methane, bis-(2-hydroxyphenyl) methane, bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) methane, 2,2- bis-(3,5-dichloro-4-hydroxyphenyl) propane, 2,2- bis - (3,5 - dibromo-4 - hydroxyphenyl) propane, and bis - (3,5 - dichloro - 4 - hydroxyphenyl) methane. The blend may be produced by mixing solutions of the polymers and coprecipi. tating, kneading the solids on a roll, or mixing powders or pellets and melt extruding. Other conventional additives such as pigments, stabilizers, plasticizers, U.V. absorbers, lubricants may also be present. Examples utilize polymers selected from those specified above.
