Abstract

1360007 Liquid polyurethane compositions DULUX AUSTRALIA Ltd 17 Aug 1971 [17 Aug 1970] 38482/71 Heading C3R Liquid polyurethane compositions essentially free of polymer particles visible under an optical microscope and comprising a self-stabilized dispersion of gelled urethane polymer in an organic liquid are prepared by reacting a polyisocyanate and a polyhydroxy precursor at a total concentration of reactants not exceeding 30% by weight in an inert organic liquid in which the reactants are essentially soluble at the reaction temperature with the limitations that (a) the polyisocyanate comprises on average at least 1À5 isocyanate groups per molecule, (b) the polyhydroxy precursor comprises on average at least 1À5 OH groups per molecule and at least 30% by weight of pendant chains having a structural backbone of at least 10 covalently linked carbon atoms, the said chain being solvatable by the inert organic liquid but inert with respect to the urethane gel-forming reaction, (c) the polyisocyanate and polyhydroxy precursor in combination shall comprise at least 15% by weight of the pendant chains and (d) the mixture of polyisocyanate and polyhydroxy precursor is selected to be a gellable composition which at a concentration of at least 50% by weight in the inert organic liquid reacts to form a visible polymeric gel. The polyisocyanate may be aliphatic or aromatic and may be tolylene diisocyanates, hexamethylene diisocyanate, pphenylene diisocyanate or diphenylmethane-4,4<SP>1</SP>- diisocyanate. Suitably the pendant chains of the polyhydroxy precursor are hydrocarbon chains which may be saturated or unsaturated. Such precursors may be (1) polyhydroxy partial esters of a fatty acid and a polyol, (2) an ester of a fatty acid and an epoxy resin or (3) an alkyd resin containing unreacted OH groups. The inert organic liquid preferably at least in part is a drying oil. Paint compositions may be prepared by dispersing pigments in the liquid compositions. Conventional paint vehicles, e.g. solutions of alkyd resins in a volatile liquid may also be added to the compositions. In typical examples a polyhydroxy precursor is prepared by reacting soya oil fatty acids with a polyhydric alcohol, dipentaerythritol, pentaerythritol, sorbitol, glycerol, tripentaerythritol and trimethylolethane, diluted with xylene and reacted with tolylene diisocyanate.
