Abstract

1359681 Phenylazo-valeronitriles KANSAI PAINT CO Ltd and WAKO PURE CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 April 1971 [25 March 1970] 25272/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein X is H or halogen, R 1 is H, halogen or C 1 -C 8 alkyl and R 2 is C 1 -C 4 alkoxy. They may be obtained by reacting an appropriate phenylhydrazine with a ketone of formula reacting the resulting ketazine with HCN at temperatures below 40‹ C., and oxidizing the hydrazo compound at temperatures below 20‹ C., e.g. with HBr and Br 2 or HCl and Cl 2 . Examples are given for the production of the compounds. They are useful as photosensitizers for photopoly merization.
