Abstract

1359227 Reducing M.W, of rubbers UNIROYAL Inc 9 Sept 1971 [11 Sept 1970] 42050/71 Headings C3E and C3P Natural and synthetic rubbers are treated to reduce their M.W. and Mooney viscosity, and to narrow the M.W. distribution, by passing a solution thereof through a homogenizer under a pressure of at least 4000 p.s.i. A particularly suitable type of homogenizer is described in detail, and examples are directed to treatment of ethylene / propylene / dicyclopentadiene, ethylene / propylene / 5 - ethylidene - 2 - norbornene, ethylene / propylene, nitrile, styrene/ butadiene and cis-polybutadiene rubbers, the solvents being n-hexane, chlorobenzene, methyl ethyl ketone and toluene.
