Abstract

1359198 Ocular implant ALZA CORP 11 Aug 1971 37792/71 Heading A5B A medicament form which can be inserted into the cul-de-sac of the conjuctiva between the sclera of the eyeball and the eyelid comprises an appropriately shaped and dimensioned flexible body composed of a polymeric material outer mantle containing a drug or drug composition which is released gradually by molecular diffusion through the mantle either as such or in solution with tear liquid which diffuses through the mantle. Suitable mantle materials are: polyvinyl chloride, nylon, soft nylon, polyethylene terephthalate and silicone polymers (to which a plasticizer may be added); hydrophilic hydrogels of acrylic and methacrylic acid esters, modified collagen, crosslinked hydrophilic polyether gels and crosslinked, partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate. A very wide selection of drugs are enumerated including antibiotics, antibacterials, anti-allergics, anti-inflammatory agents, decongestants, moitics and antichlorinesterases and sympathomimetics, many specific examples being given.
