Abstract

1358834 Spindle mountings PLESSEY CO Ltd 31 Aug 1971 [30 May 1970] 26211/70 Heading B3T [Also in Divisions D1 and B8] An adapter for use with rotary machines such as lathes or coil-winding machines to enable either of two spindles mounted thereon to be driven comprises a support 12 carrying a post 26 on which is mounted a carrier plate 22 which is axially movable and pivotable between alternative positions wherein one of the spindles 28, 30 on the carrier plate may be engaged with a driving spindle 6 of the machine. A full coilwinding mandrel may thus be replaced with an empty one 62 whilst a coil is being wound on the driven mandrel 44. The mandrel positions are exchanged by withdrawing a tailstock 8, enabling a spring 24 to push the plate 22 away from its support and disengage driving spindle 6. After manual rotation of the plate, tailstock 8 is reengaged with the empty mandrel, pushing its spindle into engagement with the driving spindle. A dummy spindle 48 may be provided on the support 12 to facilitate manual rotation of the non-driven spindle using a knob 54.
