1358421 Laminates CENTRE TECHNIQUE DE L'INDUSTRIE DES PAPIERS CARTONS ET CELLULOSES 16 Sept 1971 [17 Sept 1970] 43298/71 Heading B5N [Also in Division F2] A composite reinforced material is produced by a process comprising forming a travelling flexible sheet, e.g. a sheet of paper, non-woven or woven fabric or film, about an axis into a tubular shape or the shape of part of a tube over at least a portion of its travel and depositing on the internal tubular or part tubular surface at least one continuous thread, tape or strip of material by subjecting it to centrifugal action with respect to the axis. The tube of composite material may then be flattened or cut along at least one of its generator lines to permit subsequent winding. In Fig. 1, two flexible sheets 3 and 4 are unwound from reels 1 and 2, and together formed into a tube in fixed tubular chamber 5 having concentric walls 6 and 7 forming between then an annular chamber 8 communicating with the interior of the chamber by orifices 9 and with the exterior by evacuation conduit 9<SP>1</SP> to facilitate evaporation of solvent of applied adhesive. The device for applying the reinforcing thread, tape or strip comprises shaft 10 driven in rotation at a variable speed by motor 11 and carrying reels 12 free to rotate on spindles 13, thread, tape or strip 14 unwound from the reel being guided to the vicinity of the wall of the chamber by guide assembly 15 carrying a reservoir filled with glue which flows on to the thread, tape or strip. At the outlet of the chamber, two diametrically-opposite blades 20 separate the composite material into strips 21 and 22 which are wound on to drums 23 and 24. In alternative arrangements either previously glued threads are used and heating means are provided in the chamber to soften the adhesive, or, in the case of synthetic fibres, a rotating extrusion head is provided in the chamber. The threads may be of polyamide, polyester or polyethylene, and in the case of nylon thread the adhesive may be an aqueous alcoholic solution of a polyamide.
