Abstract

1358381 Knitting machines T F ST CLAIR LANGHAM 21 March 1972 [24 March 1971] 7889/71 Heading D1C In advance of each feed of a circular multifeed knitting machine, there is provided a selector unit comprising rotary cam means 11 driven from the knitting machine which operate pattern butt displacing cams 16 through intermediate members 20 which, under the control of pattern means through pulsing circuitry, are or are not allowed to be operated by the cam means 11. A stack of twelve cams 11 are mounted in a casing 10 each being offset from the next by one spline on a twelve splined vertical shaft 12 with, secured on its lower end, a twelve toothed pinion 14 which meshes with a ring gear 15 concentric with the cylinder and having the same number of teeth as the number of needles in the cylinder so that the stack rotates once per each twelve needles. Cams 16 on pivoted arms 17 carried on a pivot pin 18 can be retracted into the casing 10 against stops 19 or projected therefrom so that faces 16a act on any protruberant jack butt in the relevant plane to push the jack inwards. Armatures 22 pivoted on pin 23 and coplanar with cams 11 each have two limbs 22a ,22b terminating respectively in tip 22c which engages recess 20a in the corresponding slider 20 and a lobe 22d armature 22 to the corresponding arm 17 to hold cam 16 against its stop 19. Each limb 22b has a pole piece 27 which can be moved on or pulled off a permanent magnetic yoke 25 common to all the armatures. When the lobe 22d of an armature 22 is opposite a recess in its cam 11 and a high amplitude pulse is applied to a coil 26 opposing yoke 25 polepiece 27 is pulled off by its spring 24 and the tip 22c of limb 22a advances the corresponding slider 20 into "selected" position where the end 20b will be acted on by formation 11c which moves it to "operative" position. When formation 11c has passed tail 20b, the slider is pulled back to "reset" position by the spring and returned to "home" position by the formation 11d on the rotary cam. The armatures are immediately reset on their magnets by the ending of recess 11b and the remaining magnets are held during the selection by their cams 11 which do not have a recess at this position. Pulsing may be by "bits" of uniformation from e.g. a punched tape with a longitudinal row of holes for each feed and transmitted through a reader.
