Abstract

1358147 Electro-photographic process PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 1 March 1973 [4 March 1972] 9967/73 Heading G2H [Also in Division H1] In a method of manufacturing the phosphor dot pattern of a colour television tube screen, in which the faceplate is covered, in sequence, with volatalizable conductive and photo-conductive layers, the photo-conductive layer is uniformly changed and then exposed to light to leave only the areas to be covered with a given colour phosphor charged, oppositely charged phosphor particles of that colour are deposited thereon from an insulating liquid, the process is repeated for the other phosphor colours, and finally the photo-conductor layer with the phosphor regions is uniformly charged and exposed and lightabsorbing particles from an insulating liquid are deposited between the charged phosphor regions, the invention provides that the phosphor particles of at least one colour are provided, before mixing with the insulating liquid, layer of hygroscopic material which is electrically conductive when moist, such that the phosphor pattern of that colour may be rendered conductive before the subsequent provision of a pattern of a second colour, to prevent the contamination of incompletely discharged areas of the first colour by the second colour, and may be rendered non- conductive between the provision of the final colour pattern and the light absorbing layer. The photo-conductive layer is charged by a corona discharge, and is exposed to produce for a given colour a charge pattern for e.g. red dots which are smaller than the apertures of an associated shadow mask either by employing the penumbra effect of a comparatively large light source located in turn at the blue and the green deflection centres, or by employing an annular light source located at the red deflection centre a phosphor pattern is rendered conductive by exposing to moist air, and the conductive and photo-conductive layers, which may be of polyvinyl pipenidinium chloride and polyvinyl carbarzole, respectively, are finally removed by baking. The hygroscopic material may be an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol, choline chloride, and glycerine, and the light absorbing material black Fe 2 O 3 .
