Abstract

1357009 Boots &c SOBERING AG 3 May 1971 [2 May 1970] 12686/71 Heading A3B (Also in Divisions B5 and C3] A polyamide is a condensation product of a) a polymerised fatty acid of dimer content 60 to 80wt% in free or esterified form, which is partially hydrogenated to an iodine No. of 20 to 50; (b) 0.5 to 10% (by wt. of (a) of an aromatic or C 6-12 aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or ester; and (c) 0.95 to 1.0 equivalents of ethylene diamine per equivalent of (a)+(b); the proportions of (a), (b) and (c) being chosen to provide a softening point of 142 to 170‹C and a viscosity of 20 to 100 poises at 180‹C. Specified acids (b) are adipic, azelaic, sebacic and terephthalic. The product may contain a stabiliser e.g. an aromatic phosphoric acid ester and/or a secondary aromatic amine, triphenyl phosphate and commercially available p, p'-bis-alkylated diphenylamines being used in Examples. Uses. The products are useful for bonding leather to itself or other materials especially as thermocements in lasting machines in shoe manufacture e.g. for toe, side or heel lasting, particularly for lasting the bent over part of the upper to an insole. The leather may be fatted, hollow-grained or treated with fluorinecontaining chemicals and the insoles may be waxed. The surfaces may be adhered at 160 to 190‹C.
