Abstract

1356642 Polyurethane foam PROCTER & GAMBLE Ltd 12 April 1972 [15 April 1971] 9517/71 Heading C3R An adsorbent mass comprises polyurethane foam to the surface of which has been chemically bonded by means of a polyfunctional coupling agent an organic nitrogenous substance selected from polyethyleneimines; copolymers thereof with alkylene oxides; acylated polyethylene imines; pyridine; quinoline and tertiary amines having 3 to 6 carbon atoms. The polyurethane foam may be treated with the coupling agent in a solvent which is not a solvent for the foam and after removal of any surplus reagent or solvent with the nitrogenous substance dissolved in a solvent. The coupling agent is a compound with at least two functional groups and can be bonded to the polyurethane via the amino and/or hydroxyl groups thereof whilst still having a functional group reactive with the nitrogenous substance, and is preferably a di- or higher chloride, bromide or iodide of a polybasic acid, e.g. terephthaloyl chloride, cyanuric chloride, succinoyl chloride and sebacoyl chloride. The preferred nitrogenous substance is polyethylene imine of M.W. from 100 to 5000. The foam is suitable for use in a process of washing articles in an aqueous wash liquor, the wash liquor being caused to flow over and/or through the foam. Dirt and fugitive dyes released from the articles being washed are scavenged by the foam.
