Abstract
1356634 Hydrocarbons BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 14 June 1972 [22 July 1971] 34443/71 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] A catalyst for the reforming of hydrocarbons boiling in the gasoline range comprises a platinum-group metal and arsenic in specified proportions on a refractory support, and is free of alkali metals and of alkaline-earth metals. In the example, the support is of alumina, obtained by calcination of a hydrate, having a surface area of 242 m.<SP>2</SP>/g., a pore volume of 0À37 ml./g. and a particle size of 60 to 80 mesh BSS. One portion of this is impregnated with a solution of chloroplatinic acid, other portions are impregnated with mixed solutions comprising arsenic trioxide dissolved in HCl and mixed in varying proportions with the solution of chloroplatinic acid. The impregnated supports are dried at 110‹ C. and reduced in hydrogen at 500‹ C. The catalysts so obtained are used to treat a feedstock of hydrogen and n-hexane at 500‹ C., giving products containing principally benzene with smaller proportions of toluene and of xylenes. Reference is also made to impregnating the support with separate solutions of Pt and of As in either order, and to ion-exchange techniques. Lists of suitable salts of Pt and As are given. The refractory support may be, e.g. silica, alumina, silica-alumina, boria-alumina or a zeolite. The catalysts may also contain chlorine. Hydrogen may be present or absent during the reforming. The feedstock may be a petroleum fraction, and is preferably free of sulphur.
