Abstract

1356576 Sodium sulphur cells ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 27 Aug 1971 [4 Aug 1970] 37648/70 Heading H1B A sodium sulphur storage cell includes a solid electrolyte in the form of a closed ended ceramic tube 1 separating molten sodium 3 within the tube from molten sulphur 2 contained in porous graphite felt within a metal case 4. The lower open end 5 of the tube 1 extends beyond an end plug 6 of the case 4 and a seal between the molten electrodes 2, 3 is established by an 0- ring 7 of elastomeric material compressed by a locking washer 8 against the plug and tube by a thrust block 11 held by screws 12. A fine bore tube 9 encircled by a further 0-ring 13 extends into a sodium reservoir 10 connected by a threaded end plate 14 to the thrust block 11. Pressurized gas above the sodium level in the reservoir ensures that the tube 1 is always filled with sodium. The reservoir 10 is of metal and the block 11 is of insulating material. A battery may be formed by a number of cells (Fig. 2, not shown), the reservoir being common to each of the cells.
