1356077 Stabilizing waste material GENERAL SIGNAL CORP 13 Dec 1972 [11 April 1972] 57521/72 Heading C1C Waste material (e.g. raw waste, sewage, primary clarifier effluent or secondary sludge) is stabilized by mixing the material with an oxidizing agent and subjecting the mixture to rapid circulation under pressure in a first zone to provide oxidation of the material, recirculating a major portion of the mixture from a first zone back through this zone and subjecting the remaining portion of the mixture from the first zone to further cirulation under pressure in a second zone to promote further oxidation of the material. The process may be carried out in the apparatus shown in the accompanying Figure wherein waste material entering along conduit 10 is mixed with an oxidizing agent, e.g. chlorine gas supplied from means 14, and passed via pump 12 and tangentially positioned nozzle 18 into tank 20. Mixture discharged from this tank via conduit 22 is partially recirculated to the tank 20, the remainder being fed to a second reaction tank 30 for further treatment. The flow restrictor 28 and the pump 34, which is arranged to operate in opposition to the direction of flow from the second tank, maintain the required high pressures in the first and second tanks respectively. The tangentially positioned nozzle 18 and a similarly positioned nozzle serving tank 30 provide a circulatory flow of waste material within the tanks.
