Abstract

1355908 Dust collector B J RAWICKI [trading as DUST CONTROL (CORNWALL)] 4 April 1972 15490/72 Heading B1R A dust collector for extracting dust particles from dust-laden air, comprises an air inlet duct 2 having sides shaped to direct air vertically downwardly into a water reservoir 5 to create a self-induced water spray, a top plate 6 over the reservoir for conducting the air over the surface of water in the reservoir to create a zone of sustained air turbulence over the whole of the surface of water in the reservoir, baffle means 12 for creating a further zone 13 of air turbulence above the top plate, a spray eliminator 14 for removing water spray and entrained wet dust from air passing therethrough, and a generally horizontal outlet duct positioned above the spray eliminator, longitudinally of the dust collector and parallel to the air inlet duct, for connection to a fan for inducing the air flow mountable at the end 25 of the dust collector remote from the entrance to the air inlet duct. Turbulence in the air flow over the water surface may be created by a number of baffles constricting the air passage such as channels 7 acting as first baffles and a bend in the roof 6 acting as second baffles 11. Baffle means 12 are adapted to direct air against the exterior of the inlet duct. The inlet duct may comprise a generally horizontal tubular member with a longitudinal slot 4 to direct air into the reservoir. The spray eliminator may comprise a grid of parallel plates 15 which deflect the air flow through successive acute angles, e.g. in succession through two acute angles, the first being more acute than the second. Spray and wet dust which deposit on plates 15 drip down and collect in channels 7 which deliver the slurry through downspouts 17 and 18 into the reservoir from which the sediment is continuously dredged. The water level may be maintained by a float-operated magnetic switch. The collector may be mounted on a sled 1 for towing behind a mining cutter in an underground mine.
