1355858 Fuel elements ASEA-ATOM AB 8 Oct 1971 [12 Oct 1970] 46872/71 Heading G6C A nuclear fuel assembly comprises a plurality of fuel rods 4 each containing a stack of fuel pellets 5 and a number of fuel-poison discs 7 having particles of burnable poison dispersed in a matrix of fuel, these discs 7 alternating with the fuel pellets 5 in such a way that within one and the same fuel rod 4 the distance between any two adjacent discs 7 is greater than about 4 cm. but less than about 20 cm. preferably between 5 and 10 cm. The fuel pellets 5 may be of UO 2 and the fuel-poison discs 7 of a solid solution of discrete particles, about 10 Ám. in size, of Gd 2 O 3 in UO 2 , each disc 7 containing from 25 to 150 mg. of Gd 2 O 3 . Preferably the fuel-poison discs 7 in one fuel rod are axially displaced in relation to the discs in another, adjacent fuel rod. Where the corner fuel rods are of smaller diameter than the other fuel rods of the assembly the complication of manufacturing two series of discs having different diameters is avoided by not providing the narrower corner rods with burnable poison.
