Abstract

1355840 Cupping; making hollow bodies STANDUN Inc 10 June 1971 [11 June 1970] 19859/71 Headings B3A and B3Q [Also in Division F2] In a metal forming press a horizontal ram is supported in bearings which include vertical pads on the ram or bn the press-frame through openings in which oil is supplied under pressure. As applied to a press for forming can bodies from cup-shaped blanks 264, Fig. 14, fed down a shoot, a slide 70, Fig. 22, carrying the ram 72, Fig. 10, has vertical and horizontal bearing pads 86, 88 co-acting with slideways 76 and to which lubricant is supplied, through links 100, from a pump (102), Fig. 1 (not shown). A forward bearing 87, Fig. 19, for the ram 72 is mounted in a holder 80 and supplied with oil through passages 114, 110, drain passages (116), Fig. 21 (not shown), opening to the bore between and control ring 118 and the bearing 78. The slide is reciprocated, with a slow return, by a lever 66, Fig. 6, which is connected to the slide by a rod 68 and is rocked by a crank shaft 74 and a connecting rod 62 driven, through gearing 54, 56, by a motor (42), variable-speed drive, belting and a flywheel. Dies: lubricating tools: strippers.-A dieholder 158, Fig. 14, attached to the frame 44 carries a drawing ring assembly 138, three ironing ring assemblies 142, 146, 150 and a stripper assembly 154 spaced by rings 140, 144, 148 and 152. The ironing ring assemblies include a main body 168, Fig. 16, supporting wear-rings 172 between which is a dismountable unit including an outer ring 174 on which is housed the die-ring 164, backed by a resilient ring 178 and a lubrication ring 176 having tangential passages 194 providing a curtain of lubricating and cooling fluid. A pivoted cover 180 with an adjusting screw 182 secures the dismountable ring unit 174 in position. Cooperating projections and recesses axially align the dies and spacers and dowels prevent relative rotation. An end-forming die 220 is located at the end of the assembly. The stripper 154, Fig. 17, includes segments 204 biased inwardly by a resilient ring 214 and located by pins 202. Additional ironing dies may be added to the assembly. Work holding; feeding and locating.-A hollow mandrel 126, Fig. 10, is extended by penumatic pistons 122 so that it enters a blank located in a yoke 268, Fig. 14, before the ram passes through the mandrel for drawing the blank. The mandrel 126 is mounted on a plate 124 which is carried by rods 128 projecting rearwardly of the ram and attached to a rear yoke 130. As the ram is retracted, shock absorbers 136 thereon engage the yoke 130 and withdraw it, retracting the piston 122 into cylinders in the holder 80. The lower opening of the shoot 266 may be blocked by a slide (272), Fig. 17 (not shown), when it is desired to stop the gravity-feed for servicing.
