Abstract

1355781 Photo-electric detection of postage stamps H HUDLER 23 March 1972 [30 March 1971] 13590/72 Heading G1A Postage stamps on items of mail are detected photo-electrically by scanning the stamp serrations. Light from a source 3 is incident at grazing incidence on the letter, moved at constant velocity V on belt 1. The photo-detector nears the light reflected from the edges of the serrations via a slit, which is oriented parallel to the illuminated sides of the serrations. Alternatively, to avoid errors due to the letter-detector distance variations, two crossed cylindrical lenses may be used with a slit in front of the detector, Figs. 2b, 2c (not shown). To cover the area within which under international regulations the stamp should be stuck, a staggered array of photo-cells may be used, connected with respective circuits to an OR-gate which operates a switch to allow only the photo-cell output which corresponds to detection of serrations to pass, Fig.4 (not shown). The output circuit of the (or each) detector 4 comprises an amplifier tuned to the frequency which will be generated by the passage of serrations across the field of view of the detector. When the amplitude of the amplifier is above a certain threshold (A) Figs. 5a-c (not shown) and it lasts above this threshold for a certain duration (until B) as tuned by a timer 6, in the form of a resistance-capacitance integrator circuit, or a counter of a preset member of pulses, it is evident that a stamp has been detected and switch 8 is actuated. Shorter interference pulses either do not reach threshold A or do not last as long as B. The detection device is orientable to be able to detect the brightest reflections, and the light source is rotatable in correspondence. If stamps have different serration pitches e.g. in accordance with value, a plurality of amplifiers tuned to different frequencies are used and checking and sorting according to value is possible.
