Abstract
1355590 Gas discharge display panels INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 21 Dec 1972 [26 Jan 1972] 59250/72 Heading H1D A multi-colour gas discharge display device (Fig.6) includes at least two discharge chambers 5, 6 and 7 arranged side-by-side in the direction of discharge, each chamber having a pair of conductor arrays, e.g. 11 and 31 associated with it, one disposed on each side of the chamber with the conductors in one array of the pair arranged to cross the conductors in the other array and the crosspoints defining individual discharge cells each of which is operable to emit an area of light of a primary colour, there being three directions in which all the conductors 0, 1 and 2 in all the arrays are dispersed (Fig. 2) with discharge cells for two of the three primary colours being alternately arranged in each of the three different directions. Each discharge space 5, 6 and 7 is limited by two glass layers 5<SP>1</SP>5<SP>11</SP>, 6<SP>1</SP>6<SP>11</SP> or 7<SP>1</SP>7<SP>11</SP>. Blue phosphorescent elements 5<SP>111</SP> are associated with the cells of space 5, red elements 6<SP>111</SP> with the cells of space 6, and green elements 7<SP>111</SP> with the cells of space 7. The elements are positioned in relation to each other as shown in Fig. 2 in which the conductors 0, 1 and 2 correspond to the conductors 11, 21 and 31 respectively of Fig. 6. An alternative layer of circular phosphorescent elements is described (Fig. 3, not shown) and an arrangement of diamond-shaped elements in which to a viewer the individual elements adjoin each other without any gaps (Fig. 4, not shown). An alternative device (Fig. 7, not shown) has only two discharge chambers one of which contains both blue and red elements and has two electrode arrays insulated from each other on one of its limiting glass layers. As an alternative to the use of phosphorescent elements the cells may be separated by walls, each cell being filled with a gas emitting one of the primary colours.
