1355000 C 12 -C 22 ethylene polymers JEFFERSON CHEMICAL CO Inc 11 Oct 1972 46940/72 Heading C5E An integrated process for making C 12 -C 22 α-olefins and C 12 -C 20 vinylidene olefins comprises: (1) catalytically polymerizing ethylene with an organo-metallic catalyst (e.g. AlR 3 ) by the growth-displacement reaction, separating the catalyst from the polymerization effluent and separating the α-olefin product mixture into 3 fractions, e.g. by distillation: (a) C 6 -C 12 α-olefins, (b) C 12 -C 22 α-olefins which is recovered and (c) C 22 -C 28 α-olefins ; (2) dimerizing fraction (a) with an organometallic catalyst (e.g. AlR 3 ) to form a vinylidene polymerization effluent containing catalyst; (3) diluting this effluent with fraction (c) from (1); (4) separating C 12 - C 20 vinylidene olefins from the diluted effluent and recycling the remaining effluent containing the catalyst to the growth-displacement catalyst in (1). The growth-displacement reaction may be carried out at 150-300‹ C. and 3,000- 6,000 psig, and the dimerization reaction at 140-300‹ C. and 600-3,000 psig.
