Abstract

1354941 Monitoring mark-space ratio of pulses ML ENG (PLYMOUTH) Ltd 9 June 1972 [11 May 1971] 14346/71 Heading H3T The mark-space ratio of a pulse train is monitored by charging respective capacitors in accordance with the mark and space durations and activating an oscillator when the ratio of the capacitor voltages is within a given range. Absence of both mark and space may also be detected. As shown, capacitors C1 and C2 charge in accordance with the mark and space durations respectively of the input pulse train. The capacitor voltages are applied respectively to the emitter and base 2 of a unijunction transistor circuit and this oscillates only if the voltages are in a given ratio. The oscillator is rectified at D3 and used to operate an alarm relay. An inhibit gate G is inserted at 6 and blocks the output if both mark and space are not present. The gate comprises two saturable cores each having windings respectively carrying erect and inverted forms of one of the two pulse trains and arranged to provide a low impedance at an output winding only if both pulses are present. In Fig. 3, not shown, the capacitors are charged by connecting them through diodes between erect and inverted sources of the pulses whereby, if both forms of each pulse are not present oscillation will not occur.
