Abstract
1354561 Preparing polyethylene terephthalate HALCON INTERNATIONAL Inc 14 June 1971 [15 June 1970 30 April 1971] 27691/71 Heading C3R A process for preparing polyethylene terephthalate comprises forming a mixture of water with a feed of ester material consisting essentially of a bis-(#-acyloxyethyl)terephthalate wherein the acyl group has 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a mixture thereof with a mono-(#-acyloxyethyl) terephthalate corresponding thereto, subjecting the mixture to hydrolysis conditions in the liquid phase until from 25% to 100% of the acyloxy moieties contained in the ester material are liberated as the corresponding carboxylic acid thereby forming a hydrolysate containing bis-(#-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate or a mixture thereof with mono-(#-hydroxyethyl)terephthalate, together with the acid, and polymerizing the hydrolysate to form polyethylene terephthalate. The carboxylic acid and any unreacted water may be removed from the hydrolysate prior to polymerization. The feed may include oligomers of the ester material. The ester feed is preferably bis-(#-acetoxyethyl) terephthalate. The hydrolysis may be carried out either batch-wise or continuously. Polymerization catalysts used in the Examples are antimony trioxide, the oxides of zinc, calcium, cerium, cadmium, lithium and aluminium, the carbonates of antimony, titanium, lithium and zinc, the sulphides of aluminium, antimony, lead and cadmium, and the hydroxides of antimony, calcium, lithium and zirconium.
