Abstract

1354406 Surgical dressings DOW CHEMICAL CO 14 July 1971 [27 July 1970] 32997/71 Heading A5R [Also in Divisions B2 B5 and D1] A process for sticking a dry, particulate, water-swellable. substantially water-insoluble polymer to a fibrous material, comprises bring- ing the polymer and the material into contact with each other and treating the combination with steam. The material may be for use as a water absorbent bandage, absorbent part of a diaper, tampon, compress or pad, and may comprise a woven or non woven fabric, cellulosic fluff or wadding, surgical gauze, paper, rayon, cotton, wool or asbestos fibres. Preferred polymers include polyacrylamide which has been cross linked with N,N'-methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBA) and partially hydrolysed with alkali metal hydroxide to convert a proportion of the carboxamide groups to alkali carboxylate. Other suitable polymers include sodium polyacrylate cross-linked with MBA; polyvinylpyrrolidone cross-linked with the divinyl ether of diethylene glycol; acrylamide-N-vinylpyrrolidone copolymer cross linked with MBA; maleic anhydride styrene copolymer (of which the anhydride groups have been hydrolysed and neutralized) cross-linked with triethylene tetramine, a glycol, an alkylenediamine or a divinyl monomer; acrylic acid (or sodium salt thereof) - ethylene copolymer cross-linked with MBA; sodium polystyrene sulphonate; sodium polyvinyl toluene sulphonate or polymers or copolymers of vinyloxazolidinone or vinylpyrrolidinone. The granular dry polymer may be sprinkled on to a sheet of substrate e.g. a facial tissue to form a coating thereon or tumbled e.g. with cotton linters. The mixture is then steamed. Pressure may be applied after or during steaming e.g. by running the material between two rolls or by use of a press. The substrate may be pretreated with a water soluble cationic polymer such as polyethyleneimine, a polyalkylenepolyamine, a polyaminoalkyl acrylate, a cationic starch, or a cationic derivative of polyacrylamide in which a proportion of the carboxamide groups are replaced by dimethylaminomethyl or dimethylaminoethyl groups. The substrate may be dipped in an aqueous solution of the polymer and dried before application of the gel. The finished substrate may be formed into an article of quilted construction, i.e. having the absorbent material contained between two retaining sheets of porous fabric.
