Abstract
1354245 Overvoltage protection GOSUDARSTVENNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY ENERGETICHESKY INSTITUT IMENI GM KRZHIZHANOVSKOGO 18 May 1972 23428/72 Heading H2H A surge arrester comprises a plurality of uncontrolled spark gaps 1a-1n and at least one controlled spark gap 6a connected in series across terminals 11<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>11</SP> to which is connected the apparatus to be protected, each spark gap being connected, by way of a resistor 2a-2n to at least a pair of oppositely poled semi-conductor breakdown devices 3a, 4a-3n, 4n, the ignition of the spark gap 6a being dependent upon the current flow along the string of breakdown devices by way of a current transformer 9, control unit 8, transformer 29 and control electrode 7. Voltage grading capacitors 5a-5n are provided. In operation the breakdown diodes 3a, 4a-3n, 4n tend to clamp the voltage across terminals 11<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>11</SP> to a normal value and the current flowing along the diode string is insufficient to trigger the spark gap 6a and in consequence the spark gaps 1a-1n remain in the normal condition. Should the voltage across the terminals 11<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>11</SP> rise to unacceptable limits the requisitely poled of the diodes 3a, 4a &c. will be driven into the avalanche portions of their characteristics whereupon an output is derived from the current transformer 9. This output is rectified by a full wave bridge 12 in the control unit 8, the output from which bridge tends to charge a capacitor 17. When the capacitor 17 acquires sufficient charge a semiconductor threshold device 22 breaks down and a capacitor 25-previously charged from a D.C. source 27-produces an impulse at the control electrode of a thyristor 20 thereby turning on the thyristor. A capacitor 30 which has been previously charged from a D.C. source 32 then discharges through the primary winding 28 of a transformer 29 thus producing a pulse output from the secondary winding 33 thereof. This pulse is applied to the control electrode 7 of the spark gap 6a which sparks over and causes the gaps 1a-1n to spark over in turn whereby the voltage at terminals 11<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>11</SP> is reduced. In a second embodiment a second controlled spark gap and a plurality of non linear resistors are connected in series with the spark gap chain.
