Abstract

1353766 Uranium and thorium chlorides KERNFORSCHUNGSANLAGE JULICH GmbH 28 July 1971 [17 Aug 1970] 35522/71 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions F4 and G6] Apparatus for the chlorination of a carbide and/or oxide of uranium and/or thorium, as described in Specification 1,226,718, comprises a porous graphite furnace tube 4 which can be heated by the direct passage of an electric current, a ceramic furnace casing 3, and a condenser 2 connected to the casing by a conduit 5. Fuel elements comprising graphite and coated fuel particles are ground and fed into the apparatus from metering device 5a. Chlorine or a chlorine-containing gas is introduced through ducts 6, 7. Chlorides are condensed in condenser 2 which includes a gas permeable tube 9 which may have tangential slots.
