Abstract
1353670 Methyl formate AJINOMOTO CO Inc 20 Sept 1971 [21 Sept 1970] 43823/71 Addition to 1306863 Heading C2C In a process for the preparation of methyl formate by contacting a gaseous mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in a molar ratio of 1 to not less than 0À5, with methanol in the gas phase in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, not more than half of the carbon monoxide is reacted, the reacted gases are cooled to separate liquid methyl formate which is withdrawn, the gaseous component is washed with cold methanol, the washed gaseous component is then reacted in the presence of a catalyst to produce methanol and at least part of this methanol is recycled to the initial reaction. The initial gaseous mixture may be obtained by the partial oxidation of hydrocarbons in petroleum or natural gas, or of coke, or by reforming hydrocarbons in the presence of carbon dioxide and steam. The catalyst may be alkoxides or carbonic or carboxylic acid salts of alkali or alkaline earth metals, such as beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium or barium and may optionally include ethylene oxide or substituted ethylene oxides.
