Abstract

1353154 Bar stock feeds WICKMAN MACHINE TOOL SALES Ltd 15 July 1971 [1 Aug 1970] 37271/70 Heading B3B A mechanism for feeding bar stock to a multispindle lathe in which a carrier having a plurality of guide tubes for carrying bar stock 14 is rotated with a spindle drum, comprises a rotatable feed member, e.g. discs 15, 16 or a roller 30, adapted to make frictional contact with a stock bar 14 to feed it through a collet whilst the drum is stationary, the feed member being rotatable about an axis extending tangentially to a circle described about the axis of rotation of the drum, and the feed member having a cut-away portion 19, 32 to provide clearance to enable the drum and carrier to rotate. In a first embodiment the feed member is constituted by a pair of discs 15, 16 mounted on shafts 17, 18 movable towards each other by fluid pressure to frictionally grip the stock bar 14 between the discs. The shafts 17, 18 are rotated by a reciprocable rack (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown). In a second embodiment the feed member is a roller 30 rotated on a shaft 31 by a reciprocable rack (Figs. 10 and 11, not shown). Frictional engagement is ensured by radially moving a roller 33 on the guide tube carrier to push a stock bar 14 against the roller 30. Alternative arrangement for mounting and moving the rollers 33 are described (Figs. 6-9, not shown). One or more of the feed member arrangements may be placed around the carrier and spindle drum.
