Abstract
1352974 Rotary encoder ENGLISH NUMBERING MACHINES Ltd 20 Dec 1972 [14 Jan 1972] 1875/72 Heading G4H [Also in Division G1] A transducer for measuring angular displacement comprises a flexible insulating disc 12 carrying a conductor 14 formed with a regular square wave pattern near the outer edge of the disc and a pick-up element 20 consisting of a flexible insulating sheet 21 carrying two conductor loops 23, 24 each being half the width of the main square wave pattern 14 and spaced apart by an integral number of pitches and a half pitch. Conductor 14 is connected to a coil 16 mounted on a shaft 10 together with disc 12: pick-up 20 is fixed to a stationary member 25. Coil 16 and conductor 14 are energized with AC via stationary coil 18, and the out-of-phase signals induced in the loops 23, 24 are compared to determine the direction of rotation. The angular displacement is obtained by counting the number of cycles induced in either pick-up loop. The conductor patterns may be produced by printing. The outer edge of disc 12 is shaped to press against the pick-up plate 21. The shaft 10 may be a lead screw and the transducer duplicated, one disc 12 having 254 cycles of conductor 14, for measuring in centimetres, and the other disc having 100 cycles, for measuring in inches. The transducer may be opened out to form a linear displacement transducer.
