Abstract

1352067 Amphipathic polymers PHILIP A HUNT CHEMICAL CORP 18 March 1971 7235/71 Heading C3P and C3G [Also in Division G2] Electrostatographic liquid developers contain a dispersion in a carrier liquid of toner particles comprising (1) a polymer having a moiety which is solvated by the carrier liquid and a moiety which is not solvated by the carrier liquid, and (2) a colouring agent (which may be a moiety of polymer (1)). For the preparation of the developers the examples describe the preparation of (a) poly (2-ethylhexylacrylate), and (b) copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate with one or more of 2-ethylhexylacrylate, lauryl-, stearyl- and isodecyl-methacrylates, p - phenylazoacrylanilide, and tetramethylbutylmethacrylamide, the glycidyl groups in the copolymers being partially esterified with methacrylic acid. The above partially esterified copolymers, poly(vinyl ethylether) and copoly (lauryl methacrylate/diethylaminoethyl) methacrylate then have grafted polymerized thereon hydroxypropylmethacrylate, a mixture of methacrylic acid and its methyl ester, or vinyl acetate alone or mixed with methyl hydrogen maleate, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone or crotonic acid, to form a latex. The latex may then be dyed, in some cases the dye reacting chemically with the graft copolymer. In another example, styrene is polymerized in tetrahydrofuran, isoprene is added to the product to form a block copolymer which is then grafted onto a partially esterified copolymer as above, and the solution formed treated with a petroleum hydrocarbon liquid to form a latex. The latices may be mixed with aluminium dresinate, 3,5 - di - isopropylsalicylate or 3,5 - ditertiarybutyl resorcylate, di - 2- ethylhexyl Na sulphosuccinate, a partially imidized polyamine or terpoly (octadecenyl methacrylate / styrene / diethylaminoethyl methacrylate).
