Abstract
1352000 Continuous casting; making short metallic fibres MITSUI MINING & SMELTING CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [22 June 1970] 23495/71 Headings B3A and B3F Molten metal A is extruded, e.g. mechanically or by gas pressure, through an orifice 2 having a cross-sectional area in the range 0À008 to 0À09 mm.<SP>2</SP> to form a filament which collides obliquely with a slanted cooler 3 while in a condition of hot shortness immediately after solidification and breaks into lengths F not exceeding 7 mm. The cooler may be a stainless steel plate or a water-cooled copper block; a block may be air- or water-cooled. It may be vertically and horizontally movable to determine the distance of the collision point D from the point B where the filament is completely solid. This determines the length of fibres F. The melt A may be Al, Pb or Zn, or alloys based on these metals, such as Pb containing 4% Sb or Al containing 11% Si. The fibres can be mixed with synthetic resin to form an electrically and thermally conducting material or be compacted in a die to form porous articles such as plates, e.g. battery plates, or catalyst, filter or sound insulation material.
