Abstract

1351507 Purifying C 5 -C 7 paraffinic mixtures LABOFINA SA 6 July 1971 [5 Feb 1971] 31637/71 Heading C5E The aromatics, sulphur and nitrogen contents of paraffin fractions boiling in the range 25-100‹ C. (i.e. C 5 -C 7 ) are reduced by hydrogenation at 150-375‹ C., a hydrogen partial pressure of 10-100 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>, a space velocity of 0À5 to 20 V/V/hour and a hydrogen to hydrocarbon ratio of 100-3000 Nm.<SP>3</SP>/m.<SP>3</SP> in the presence of a catalyst comprising a silicaalumina carrier containing silica in a greater quantity by weight than alumina and 0À1 to 2 wt. per cent of platinum distributed such that at least 30 wt. per cent of the platinum is on the catalyst surface which is accessible to the reactants. The feed can be pretreated to reduce its sulphur content by a caustic wash or by sweetening to convert mercaptans to disulphides which are removed on distillation to produce the 25- 100‹ C. cut. About 10% isomerization of nparaffins to iso-paraffins occurs during the hydrogenation, the product can be isomerized to branched chain paraffins for use as gasoline components.
