Abstract

135,141. Riiber, C. N. June 12, 1919. Alkali-metal chlorides.-In the purification of a chloride solution before electrolysis, the solution is treated with an alkali-carbonate, boiled, and filtered at a temperature as high as, or higher than, that prevailing in the anode chamber and diaphragm of the cell. Precipitation in the diaphragm of substances less soluble at high temperatures, such as basic magnesium carbonate, is thus prevented. Before boiling, the solution may contain carbonic acid in excess of that required for the formation of normal carbonate. Caustic alkali from the cell, or alkali carbonate, may first be added till the liquid is alkaline, the precipitate being allowed to settle and the liquid filtered, treated with carbon dioxide or limestoneburner or combustion gases, and boiled. Alkali bicarbonates may instead be added directly to the liquid.
