Abstract

1350561 Analyzing gases magnetically SIEMENS A G 17 June 1971 [18 June 1970] 28571/71 Heading G1N An apparatus for testing a gas for paramagnetic components e. g. oxygen content of a gas mixture is arranged so that the effects of unwanted movement of the apparatus on the readings therefrom are mitigated. In the arrangement of Fig. 1 a test chamber C, Fig.4 (not shown) is arranged between poles P1, P2 which produce an alternating magnetic field overlapping part of the chamber C and duct S1. Comparison gas V applied to chamber C via ducts R1, R2, S1, S2 mixes in the region of homogeneous magnetic field between pole pieces P1, P2 with the test gas M applied via duct L2. If the two gases differ in their content of paramagnetic gas the resulting alternating pressure difference occurring between ducts S1, S2 is measured by flow sensitive sensor F in flow paths T1, T2. In accordance with the invention flow paths T1, T2 are arranged in a figure of eight manner and the plane of the ducts positioned at an angle Ï less than 90 degrees to the axis of the chamber C. Thus in the event of rotation of the apparatus or other movement there are produced in the portions of each flowpath T1, T2 opposed inertial forces on the gas which cancel out. By arranging sensor F on a plane of symmetry variations in the density of the gas in ducts T1, T2 caused by pressure fluctuations in chamber C do not affect sensor F. The flowpaths T1, T2 may be formed with a substantially circular or U-shaped portion the mid portion of which is bent back on itself, Figs.3 4 (not shown). The chamber C is flat to provide laminar flow Fig.2 (not shown) and due to the arrangement of chamber and pole pieces P1, P2 the device is independant of small changes in velocity flow.
